The Long Coat Ceremony

With the end of the academic year, the UMMC School of Medicine becomes charged with anticipation, marking both the culmination of medical school for its students and the initiation of their journey into the next phase of physician training. A cherished tradition now occurs on the Thursday evening preceding the official commencement ceremony—the UMMC School of Medicine Long Coat Ceremony.

2024 Annual Town Hall Meeting

The School of Medicine (SOM) annual town hall meeting will be held virtually on Wednesday, August 21, at 4:00 pm. Dr. Loretta Jackson-Williams, Vice Dean for Medical Education, pictured here, will provide reflections of the 2023-24 academic year and highlight school priorities for this academic year.

Streamlining Student Advising with Microsoft’s “Book Time to Meet” Tool

In our continuous effort to enhance our preclinical advising program, we are excited to introduce a new feature in our communication toolbox — the “Book Time to Meet” tool in Outlook. This tool is designed to simplify the scheduling process, making it easier for you to connect with students and colleagues. Dr. Maryan Syed, pictured here, provides details.

Making Our “Mosaic” Meaningful

In the School of Medicine, we believe that the future of health care begins with the youth of our state. Over the past two years we have had the opportunity to host the Mosaic Summer Enrichment Program. Mosaic is a week-long, residential program connecting all seven of the schools on UMMC’s campus in a collaborative educational effort focused on exposing rising rural high school juniors and seniors to careers in health care. Guided by its mission to train skilled and compassionate physicians to provide high-quality and equitable health care particularly to the state’s residents, including diverse and underserved populations, the School of Medicine prepares learners to provide excellent care through programs of innovative education, state-of-the-art research and comprehensive clinical practice. DABE’s Inaugural Research Day

On Thursday, May 16, the Department of Advanced Biomedical Education (DABE) hosted its first Research Day in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union. Dr. Loretta Jackson-Williams was the invited keynote speaker. Dr. Casey Boothe gives a report on the event.

UMMC Insight Program Enters Fourth Year

From the very beginning, the UMMC Insight Team understood the importance of playing the long game.  As the inaugural cohorts of our program are entering their final years of college, we anticipate their progress toward potential careers in health care. While the exact number of students who successfully enroll in medical school remains to be seen, we have confidence that many of the participants in the resident-led program will go on to have successful careers in health care.

Summer Faculty Development Sessions

The Office of Medical Education and the Department of Advanced Biomedical Education are co-hosting a series of faculty development sessions throughout the year. The July sessions are included in this newsletter. These sessions are led by University of Mississippi Medical Center faculty and offered virtually.
